Description

Ravens Retreat is Moab's most unique and favorite vacation rental. It is truly a one-of-a-kind place. The roomy house, built by a stone mason, is situated by a creek on an acre of land with large trees providing cool summer shade. The land was once inhabited by Native American Indians and has a sacred, peaceful feel to it.

From the moment you drive down the private lane and set your sights on Ravens Retreat, you'll feel a sense of harmony and serenity envelop your soul. Very private, yet close to town, Ravens Retreat has a hot tub on the patio by the creek, with a barbecue and picnic table nearby. The house itself is beautifully, yet comfortably, decorated and easily sleeps eight people. It has a fully equipped kitchen and high-speed internet for those who want to break the spell.

Ravens Retreat is perfect for groups, families, couples, or individuals wanting a retreat. It has plenty of parking, a labyrinth, and it is also pet friendly. A music and literature library awaits, and an art studio is available upon request.

The house is owned by a nationally and internationally acclaimed photographic artist whose work is displayed throughout the house.

The One-of-a-Kind Nature of Raven's Retreat Extends to its Roomy and Colorful Interior

There's really only one question: Which of its many features will you find most captivating?

Will it be the stone floor family room with the rustic dining table, fireplace and inviting couch? Will it be the spacious living room with the cool entertainment center and CD library? Will one of the books in the giant bookcase pull you towards a prone position in one of four cozy bedrooms? Will you be transfixed by the art, both native sculptures and the photographic art created by the owner?  Will the fully equipped gourmet kitchen inspire you to put on your chef's hat? Or will you be drawn back outside to the BBQ and picnic table? We just suggest that you put off using the high speed internet access for at least a few hours!

The Labyrinth at Ravens Retreat

When you drive down the lane to Ravens Retreat you will undoubtedly notice a "prehistoric" round formation made of stone with an open doorway. It is The Labyrinth at Ravens Retreat, and it was created for the exclusive use of Ravens Retreat guests. For those uninitiated to labyrinths, their historical significance, and their purpose and use, please read on...

The History of Labyrinths

Labyrinths date back to early Crete, Egypt, Peru and India, and were used for ritual walking and spiritual contemplation. Dating back some 4,500 years, there are thousands to be found in various forms throughout the world, and hundreds in the U.S. The labyrinth is an archetype, a divine imprint, found in all religious traditions. They are known as sacred gateways. Historically they have been used both in group ritual and for private meditation and self discovery.

Why This Labyrinth and Why Here?

The design of The Labyrinth at Ravens Retreat has been replicated many times. It is an "Eaglecrest" five-circuit labyrinth based
on the inner circle of the 13th century labyrinth laid in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France. A 19th century terra cotta angel that adorns the Watts Chapel in England carries the same design.

Hundreds of year ago, Native American Indians inhabited, hunted, harvested, and conducted ceremonies on this beautiful land by the ever-flowing creek. Many guests coming to stay at Ravens Retreat today are seeking release and renewal from their daily lives and a spiritual awakening. The labyrinth was created here to honor the past inhabitants and to provide a spiritual gateway to the new.

Walking the Labyrinth

The labyrinth has only one path so there are no tricks to it and no dead ends. The path winds throughout and becomes a mirror for where we are in our lives. It touches our sorrows and releases our joys. It should be walked with an open mind and an open heart, at the pace your body wants to go.

Many people who walk labyrinths approach it in three stages:

1. Entering (Releasing) ~ A releasing, a letting go of life's details. This is the act of shedding thoughts and distractions. A time to open the heart and quiet the mind.
2. Reaching the Center (Receiving) ~ This is a place of meditation and prayer. Receive what is there for you to receive. Stay there as long as you like.
3. Returning (Union) ~ Following the same path out of the center begins the third stage, which is joining God, a Higher Power, or the healing forces at work in the world.

Although there are no promises of revelation, the rhythms and movement of a labyrinth coax us toward contemplation. And if we follow St. Augustine's inspired belief; "It is solved by walking"; old problems might just find new solutions.

Respecting the Labyrinth

While not all guests of Ravens Retreat will have a desire to walk the labyrinth, we do ask all to treat it with honor and respect. Please do not allow children and dogs to run rampantly through this sacred space. The upper back yard provides another quiet space for pure meditation.

Amenities

Raven's Retreat Offers All the Comforts of Home. Maybe More!

Plenty of Room for Family and Friends

Raven's Retreat has three full-sized bedrooms, each with queen beds. A third smaller bedroom features a comfortable hide-a-bed. Additional Murphy Beds are available upon request. All linens are provided, and there is a washer and dryer for your everyday needs. The central heat and air conditioning system keeps the temperature just the way you want it.

Fully Equipped Kitchen and Service for 12

Many of our guests mention how they enjoy special shared moments cooking in this sun-filled kitchen and entertaining in the adjacent cozy dining room with the stone fireplace. The kitchen features a gas range, microwave, refrigerator with ice maker, dishwasher, coffee maker, blender, mixer, and all the cookware and utensils a chef of any level requires. The kitchen table seats 4 and the dining table 8.

Entertainment to Fit Your Every Mood

While some might want to kick back on the comfortable living room couches to enjoy their favorite cable channel or a selection from the video library, others can satisfy their entertainment preference perusing the extensive and eclectic music and literary libraries. Of course, WiFi is available for those who can't stand the thought of being "unconnected."

Outdoor Pleasures Abound

Of course the green lawns under the large shade and fruit trees could bring on the sudden urge to play bocce ball, or light up the barbeque for an outdoor picnic feast, but there are other options. Perhaps an evening cocktail on the patio by the babbling brook is more your style. Maybe a hike up Raven's Retreat Hill to catch a beautiful sunset, or a more casual stroll down the lane to feed the horses carrots on your way to the duck pond in the park sounds more like what you had in mind. And when all else fails, just know your private hot tub is there for you 24/7!

Ample Parking and Other Amenities

In addition to two large double garages (one for use as an art studio if requested), there is extra parking space for trailers, boats and other sports equipment. The large yard is both child and pet friendly (although we ask that you don't venture into to the creek). With few limitations, the house is handicapped and wheelchair accessible. Those who wish to smoke may do so outside.
Two of the great things about Raven's Retreat are its privacy and its location close to just about everything that people come to Moab to experience. With, hiking, biking, rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, golf, movies, bowling, and antiquing within minutes of the house, as well as great restaurants and unique shopping opportunities, you'll never be bored!
